Acre

On a bright sunny Sunday, we all got together at Acre to celebrate a friend's birthday. Acre can be found in Camperdown Commons, a lovely patch of greenery with some chickens and vege in the middle of Camperdown. There are a few venues on site and they serve lunch and breakfast, too.

After a small misunderstanding about the booking that the staff sorted out expertly, they seated all sixteen of us and began to serve our set menu.

The set menu was $25 and owing to the size of our group, we had to take it. It was well worth it though, and we ended up with so much leftover to take home.   Acre was great at sorting out dietary requirements - we had sheep's milk yoghurt for the lactose intolerant - and there was some stuff that the kids liked as well.

Beans, homemade salami & sausages. The sausages - my second favorite - were juicy and filling but I found the salami too thick.

Acre is a great place to get together with friends, especially bigger groups and they take reservations. Lovely, scrumptious fresh food at a very good price point.

Two Chaps

Two Chaps is a vegetarian cafe in Marrickville, it's tiny and popping by on a weekend seems like the epitome of hipsterdom, with bearded coffeegoers in long shorts & printed collared shirts (singlets or open sided wife beaters in the summer), sockless topsiders and caps or hats of different shapes and sizes. There's also the people in active wear. Like me.

The menu  has a variety of sweet and savoury dishes, and most can be veganized or made gluten free if needed. We have been a few times now, and love the flavour combinations - special mention goes to the crumpets that are also a favourite.

I cannot resist hash browns. A good hash brown must be crunchy and crisp on the outside and soft but solid on the inside. It can't be too big or too small - if I'm going to need to eat five to be full that's a bit too small, mate - and I appreciate a good cafe that puts its own twist on the classic, but still makes it taste good. Thanks, Two Chaps.

My crumpet loving friend also loves this dish, it has just the right amount of sweetness and the use of labneh (instead of the usual ricotta) balances out the dish well.

Two Chaps is at 122 Chapel Street in Marrickville They also do dinners that we hope to be trying soon!

The Loj

Tucked in a row of restaurants on Ross street, the Loj is a non-descript, tiny cafe that serves the best hash browns in town. Aside from the hash browns they do a pretty good coffee and many other dishes that cater to every appetite.  So far this place remains a little undiscovered except to locals, so there's always a seat, but that may not be for long!

Red Eye Benedict: Crispy Hash Browns, Ham hock, poached eggs, apple chutney & red-eye mayo (I swear there are hash browns under there!)

Polenty to Go Around: parmesan & thyme polenta, roast mixed mushrooms, soft goats curd, poached eggs & herbs. I like to have these with a side of bacon. The mushrooms are juicy and the polenta is crisp, with the goats curd adding a tang of flavour.

Stockholm Morning - ocean trout gravlax, pea guacamole, hash browns  poached eggs & seasonal pickled vegetables. This is what I eat when I'm trying to be healthier but still want hash browns!

Discovered this gem of a new cafe today.  Henry Lee's has an expansive menu full of variety. There's something for everyone, and each dish is loaded with elements guaranteed to have you leaving with a full tummy.  Notable also is their excellent service - possibly the best service I've had in a restaurant in a long time. Super attentive wait staff - I waited in a queue for about 15-20 mins and they came to check if I was all right more than once, when does that ever happen? - and my food came out quickly after I ordered. Highly recommended. I'm coming back for that fancy bacon and egg roll!

Illi Hill

I am a regular visitor at Illi Hill, one of my favourite cafes in the Inner West. Aside from the excellent coffee, the owners are lovely and never fail to check in when I pop by. The food is really good too.

Avocado smash with mini tomatoes, fetta & a side of bacon. (It usually comes with rocket but I hate rocket)

Jamon Serrano on sourdough with shaved pecorino & watercress, a poached egg & truffle oil. And a side of bacon (a friend has this with a side of chorizo. Also excellent) My favourite dish here. It's hard to find a place that serves good Jamon (Spanish ham) but they do a great job of combining that with the pecorino and watercress.

Three Williams

It is somewhat ironic that I always come here for their green juice and yet it's not in the picture! (Kale, Mango, Coconut oil and a bunch of other stuff) Three Williams is one of my go-tos for a quick and easy weekend brunch. They are also never shut on public holidays so you can get yourself a good coffee no matter what.
